Title: Healing Beyond Borders: The MMFC Story
Speaker: Prof. Harry Dennis Snyder
About the Speaker:
Dr. Harry Dennis Snyder is teaching faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Tufts University School of Medicine. He has served as MMFC board member, board chair, and volunteer surgeon since 1991, and has been team surgeon/leader on 185 missions. He received the Massachusetts Medical Society Award for Excellence in Medical Service in 2015 and the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Distinguished Award for Humanitarian Service in the same year.
In addition to his medical career, Dr. Snyder is the author of four novels: Taktsang, Race Point, We Never Knew of Darkness, and Hailey.
Abstract:
As a non-profit medical organization based in Massachusetts, USA, Medical Missions for Children has long been committed to providing free treatment for children and young adults in the most remote and impoverished regions of the world. Its services include surgery for cleft lip and palate, head and neck tumors, severe burns, microtia, dental disease, and malnutrition. Since its founding in 1991, MMFC has carried out more than 520 volunteer medical missions in 15 countries, bringing life and hope to over 175,000 underprivileged patients.
The presentation will highlight MMFC’s dual mission: not only delivering high-quality surgical care, but also advancing local medical education and improving hospital infrastructure. Examples include building operating theaters and recovery rooms in Rwanda, Tanzania, and Ukraine; partnering with the Maharlika Charity Foundation in the Philippines to establish year-round cleft care centers; and collaborating with medical institutions in China on charitable surgeries and academic exchanges. The audience will see how volunteer teams change children’s lives through transformative medical interventions.
Title: Emergency Dentistry
Speaker: Prof. Charles M. Badaoui
About the Speaker:
Graduate of Collège Notre-Dame de Jamhour, Beirut. Holds a Pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy (1985) and a DMD from Boston University (1989). Clinical Assistant Professor at Tufts University since 1998 and one of the five founders, board member, and CFO of Medical Missions for Children (MMFC).
Abstract:
In dental emergencies, every second counts. Whether it’s a child injured in a hockey game, a cyclist involved in a street accident, or a patient experiencing sudden pain and swelling, our ability to respond quickly and effectively can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
Through real-life cases, we’ll explore how emergency situations are assessed, prioritized, and managed in the office — from reimplantation of avulsed teeth to stabilization of fractures and management of soft tissue injuries. We’ll also touch on how to prepare both the dental team and patients for these unexpected moments, ensuring that our primary goals — relieving pain, preserving natural teeth, and restoring function and aesthetics — are met with confidence and compassion.
