Anjana Shakya graduated from B.P Koirala Institute of Health Science, Nepal in 2003 with MBBS degree and later did her MD in Pathology from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Nepal in 2009. She also received her Postgraduate Certificate in Medical education in 2020 from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.
She has worked in various institutes as a pathologist and a lecturer in Nepal, Maldives (locum consultant) and in Malaysia, as a senior lecturer in Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia since 2018 till 2023.
As a consultant pathologist, she provided general surgical pathology, cytopathology and hematopathology services, which include grossing of surgical specimen, reporting biopsy slides, performing and reporting the results from fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, exfoliative cytology, and peripheral blood smear. She also took part in administrative laboratory work, and assisting in quality control of the pathology lab.
As a lecturer, she teaches mainly pathology to medical students, besides which she also teaches communication skills, clinical skills, and clinical reasoning. She designs, develops, and delivers the content, through lectures, seminars, video clips, and demonstration, ensuring that each teaching session is effective and aligned with the learning outcomes. She also contributes to questions writing and vetting, assignments grading, giving written or oral feedbacks in assessments, as well as providing academic and pastoral supports to the students.
As a medical educator, she has taken up various administrative roles as a basic science coordinator for the MBBS curriculum in Janaki Medical College Nepal. In Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia, she was the lead for the gastrointestinal tract block for year 1 students, and Clinical Reasoning which is a seminar-based session that discusses clinical cases for years 1 and 2 MBBS students. She was the Senior Academic Mentor who was the first point of contact for the other academic mentors if they have any questions regarding their mentees. She has also been nominated for Teachers Excellence Award for academic year 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 in Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia.
