Professor Nelson graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1978 and obtained his doctorate from the University of Otago in 1989. He joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1993. His research area related to vaccine, diarrhoeal and respiratory disease surveillance, obesity and child growth, breastfeeding promotion and sudden infant death syndrome. Professor Nelson has published widely on these areas. Professor Nelson chairs the Steering Committee of Immunization Partners in Asia Pacific that organize biennial Asian Vaccine Conferences and is a member of the ROTA Council since 2012. He was a member of Hong Kong’s Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases from 2004 to 2013. He participated in WHO’s Expert Advisory Group on Quantitative Immunization and Vaccines Related Research from 2007 to 2012 and joined in WHO’s SAGE Working Group on Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination and Broader Tetanus Control from 2015 to 2016.
