Biography

Professor Zhang graduated from Guangdong Medical School (Now Guangdong Medical University) in 2002, obtained a Master's degree in Health Service Management from Monash University in 2008, and a Master's degree in Trauma Science from Queen Mary University of London in 2016. He joined the Division of General Surgery in Shenzhen Longgang District People's Hospital in 2002, joined the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery in The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital in 2012, and served as the Director of the Trauma Center since 2021. His research areas include trauma preventable deaths, geospatial analysis techniques, trauma bay design, trauma center development, trauma training and education, regional trauma system development, trauma and acute care surgery, surgical critical care, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. Professor Zhang has published many articles in these fields.

Professor Zhang is the Chair of the American College of Surgeons ATLS China Committee, Chair of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Trauma Rescue and Treatment Association, Chair of the Abdominal and Pelvic Injury Committee of the Guangdong Medical Association, and Chair of the Committee on Trauma, Shenzhen Medical Doctor Association. In 2009, he was sent to the busiest and largest trauma center in Australia and New Zealand, the Alfred Trauma Center, for further studies; In 2015, he went to study at the Royal London Hospital Trauma Center, the London Air Ambulance System, and the Royal College of Surgeons of England; In 2017, Professor Zhang was awarded the American College of Surgeons International Guest Scholarship and visited the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland, the Harborview Trauma Center at the University of Washington, the San Diego Trauma Center at the University of California, and the Los Angeles Trauma Center at the University of Southern California. He became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) in 2018 and a Fellow of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma in 2019; He is one of the two national representatives of the World Society of Emergency Surgery in China, a Member of the International Society of Surgery and a Member of the International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care.

Professor Zhang collaborated with the American College of Surgeons China-Hong Kong Chapter, which introduced the ATLS program to China in 2016, and contributed to the formal establishment of the American College of Surgeons ATLS China program at the Shenzhen Medical Doctor Association in August 2025. Professor Zhang, along with his doctoral supervisor Academician FU Xiaobing and former president of the Committee on Trauma, Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Professor ZHANG Lianyang, translated and published the Resourses for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient in 2020; With the help of Academician JIANG Baoguo, Director of the National Center for Trauma Medicine, he founded the GD-HK-Macao Greater Bay Area Trauma Rescue and Treatment Association in July 2021 and has led and launched a new “Mission Zero Plan” (2026-2035) in August 2025, striving to reduce trauma preventable deaths to zero, working with 24 major hospitals in the region. He obtained a “Systematic Resuscitation Technology for Major Trauma Patients” training project from the National Health Commission in March 2023. In December 2024, again, Professor Zhang obtained an “Emergency, Critical and Operative Care Integrated Training Program” from the Development Center for Medical Science & Technology, National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China.
