Through training in medical knowledge, clinical skills and well profession quality, CUHK-Shenzhen MEDICINE aspires to nurture exceptional medical innovators with an international perspective and a humanistic mindset.
1) Training of high-end medical talents and awarding of dual degrees:
The School of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) inherits the training mode of medical talents of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, integrates of the international first-class medical school advanced educational philosophy, based in Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), facing China and the world, seeks to nurture outstanding innovative and caring medical talents with an international perspective, and meets the social and economic development of the urgent need of medical talents.
Upon completion of six years of study, students will be awarded bachelor of Medicine degree from the CUHK-Shenzhen, Graduation Certificate and Bachelor of Science (Clinical Medicine) degree from the CUHK.
2) World-class faculty:
The undergraduate program of Clinical Medicine welcomes its inaugural freshmen in 2021. At present, 100% of the faculty have the experience of studying, teaching or researching in world-class universities, including 3 Nobel Prize winners in chemistry, 1 academician at home and abroad, 6 president's chair professors, more than 34 national and provincial high-level talents, and 14 international visiting professors and honorary professors.
3) English adaptation training system:
· Meet the standards of Hong Kong medical education and can adapt to the training system of Hong Kong and international specialist doctors.
· Meet the medical education standards of the Ministry of Education and be able to adapt to the national clinical practitioner qualification examination.
· Core courses all taught in English and innovative medical education and training system which are better to meet the needs of overseas education and employment.
4) Whole-person training, focusing on medical humanistic quality:
· Providing a holistic education environment through the college system, where teachers and students grow together and promote students' holistic development in interpersonal skills, cultural taste, self-confidence and responsibility.
· Provide guidance and care in all aspects of study, life and career development through the three-tutor system (academic tutor, college tutor and clinical tutor).
· Pay attention to the cultivation of medical humanities education and professional quality. While giving full play to the characteristics of university humanities and general education courses, the medical ethics and professional quality education courses run through the whole learning process, and also pay attention to the construction of harmonious doctor-patient relationship, the training of communication skills and the cultivation of professional quality such as empathy.
5) First-class research platform open to undergraduates:
The university and college's first-class research platform resources are all open to undergraduates, including three Nobel Prize research institutes (Wachel Institute for Computational Biology, Kobilka Institute of Innovative Drug Discovery and Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine), provincial and municipal biomedical research platforms. The gradual scientific research training runs through the whole process, with the guidance of scientific research tutors, cultivating medical students' innovative scientific research thinking, solid scientific research skills and lifelong learning ability.
6) Admission without worry:
After graduation from clinical medicine major, students can choose to continue their postgraduate and doctoral programs in universities in CUHK-Shenzhen, Mainland China, Hong Kong and overseas. The post-graduate programs of our university and the Chinese University of Hong Kong and other world-class universities are all subject to the application review system.
The international campus atmosphere, the cultivation concept of international integration, and the English teaching of core medical courses will give students a broad international vision, independent thinking ability, excellent English ability, etc., which will have outstanding advantages in overseas study.
Under the Global Recruitment Scheme, the faculty of the School of MEDICINE, CUHK-Shenzhen consists of distinguished professionals all with extensive medical teaching and research experience at leading medical schools or research institutions in North America, Europe and elsewhere. Including faculty members with teaching experience at CU MEDICINE, as well as those who are familiar with medical education in the Mainland and have overseas study and further education experience.
100% of the pre-clinical faculty have teaching/research experience at overseas universities. As of October 2024, the MED faculty includes 3 Nobel Prize winners in chemistry, 9 academician, 10 Presidential Chair Professors, and 56 municipal, provincial and national high-level talents of various categories selected.
The number of clinical faculty members exceeds 150, with 70% of senior titles and 75% with doctoral degrees, university teaching positions or overseas training experience. There are a further 14 visiting and honorary professors from across the world.
The programme takes 6 years to complete. In the sixth year, graduates will be awarded a Graduation Certificate and a Bachelor of Medicine degree from CUHK-Shenzhen and a Bachelor of Science degree (Clinical Medicine) from CUHK.
The programme takes 6 years to complete, which mainly includes preclinical medicine courses, clinical medicine courses and clinical internship and practice etc. MED students will firstly complete two years of preclinical medicine courses, and then proceed to clinical study at the clinical teaching base in the third academic year. Clinical skills, ethical and medical humanistic literacy, and research capabilities will be developed throughout the 6 years.
Students begin clinical study at clinical teaching base in their third academic year.
The School of Medicine currently has two affiliated hospitals, including the CUHK-Shenzhen Medical Centre (also known as Shenzhen Jihua Hospital) and the Second Affiliated Hospital of CUHK-Shenzhen. Construction of the CUHK-Shenzhen Medical Centre began in December 2019, with 3,000 planned beds and a construction investment of over RMB 5.1 billion. Aiming to build a Grade-3, Level- A comprehensive hospital, integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, preventive care and rehabilitation.
Teaching hospitals that undertaking clinical teaching tasks including Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, Shenzhen Children's Hospital, and Shenzhen Nanshan Hospital. In the future, moer affiliated hospitals or teaching hospitals will be added as required.
