Joint Shantou International Eye Center (JSIEC) of Shantou University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, as the fifth affiliated hospital of Shantou University Medical College, is the only non-profit Class 3A eye hospital directly under the Health Commission of Guangdong Province with the duties of providing clinical services, education, scientific research, blindness prevention, and public welfare.  

At present, JSIEC is the Guangdong Division of National Clinical Research Center for Eye Diseases and an authorized site for National Drug Clinical Trial, and achieved the "National Key Clinical Specialty Capacity-Building Project". JSIEC is also the Engineering, Technology, and Research Center of Precision Medicine for Eye Diseases of Guangdong Province and the Base of Healthcare Education of Guangdong Province, and awarded the Key Clinical Specialty of Guangdong Province and the Key Academic Discipline of Guangdong Education Department. In addition, JSIEC has been authorized as an education and training site for Doctoral and Master Degree in Ophthalmology and practical training for the university students, and the base for the SUMC Clinical Eye Disease Research Center, SUMC Ophthalmic Research Institute, and the Leading Office and Technology Instruction Center for Myopia Monitoring and Prevention among Children and Adolescents in Shantou.

JSIEC owns a 9,508-square-meter building in the Guangxia District, equipped with 180 beds for inpatients and 80 beds for daily surgery. The new building of JSIEC in the East Coast District owns 57,249.63 square meters and equipped with 300 beds. In addition, JSIEC owns 5,000 square meters of extended outpatient clinics and Education Center. JSIEC also provides online telemedicine services.

JSIEC has been awarded Level A in the National Performance Appraisal on Tertiary Public Hospitals for four consecutive years, and ranked the top for two consecutive years in Guangdong Province. JSIEC also ranks the 2nd for eight consecutive years in the leaderboard of Specialty Reputation (Ophthalmology) among the hospitals in Southern China, and has been nominated in the nation-wide leaderboard for six consecutive years. In the National Mobile and Internet Satisfaction Survey, JSIEC ranks the top in the satisfaction recognition among the outpatients and employees in Shantou.
