Shenzhen Nanshan People's Hospital
The Shenzhen Nanshan People's Hospital is a 3A comprehensive hospital established by Nanshan Government. Located at 89 Taoyuan Rd, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. Union Shenzhen Hospital is a pilot for C-DRG charging and payment reform in China. It is also the first district hospital in Guangdong that has been authorized as a national standardized medical residency training center. Union Shenzhen Hospital is a baby-friendly hospital, the member of China Ambulatory Surgery Alliance (CASA), National Chest Pain Center (CPC) and Stroke Center. It is also an accredited national clinical trials base for drugs, medical devices, and consumables. In addition, the hospital participated in the standard procedure formulation in national emergency green channel.

Founded in 1946, the hospital was known as ‘Public Health Center of Bao’an County.’ It was then renamed ‘The People’s Health Center of Bao’an County’ in 1949, ‘The People’s Hospital of Nantou District’ in 1983, and ‘The People’s Hospital of Nanshan District’ in 1991 after the establishment of Nanshan District. In 2005, the hospital had ‘Shenzhen Sixth People’s Hospital’ as a supplementary name; in 2009, it initiated cooperation with Wuhan Union Hospital of China, rebranding itself with the name ‘Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital.’ In 2019, it was accredited as ‘Internet-based Hospital of Nanshan Hospital.’ Since then, the hospital has three official names: ‘Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital’ as the prioritized name, ‘The People’s Hospital of Nanshan District’ as the second name, and ‘Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Internet-based Hospital’ as the third name.
The hospital became a 2A hospital in 1995, a clinical teaching base for medical schools in Guangdong in 2003, and the non-directly affiliated hospital of Guangdong Medical College in 2004. In 2011, it took a further step to be a 3A comprehensive hospital in Guangdong; in the following year, it became the non-directly affiliated school of clinical medicine of Guangdong Medical University. Union Shenzhen Hospital is the first in Shenzhen that passed the 3A hospital reaccreditation based on the criteria of 2011 version in 2016. Besides, the hospital became a national standardized residency training center in 2017.
In the National Tertiary Public Hospital Performance Appraisal in 2019, Union Shenzhen Hospital got a grade of A+ and ranked 110th out of 1183 public comprehensive hospitals across the country. The hospital is among the top 4 public tertiary comprehensive hospitals in Shenzhen, and was listed the 43rd among the best 80 hospitals in the Greater Bay Area. Union Shenzhen Hospital commits to improving its medical services, with its actions published in the Health News as a commendable case in China. The hospital was also awarded the “Demonstrative Hospital for Improving Medical Services” at the national level.
Union Shenzhen Hospital has 40 clinical departments and 14 medical services departments, with 1423 open beds, and total 1482 planning beds. The hospital is a ‘Demonstration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Comprehensive Hospital’ at the national level. The Department of Pain Medicine is accredited as a key clinical specialty at national, provincial and municipal levels. The Department of Infectious Disease and the Department of Rehabilitation are both selected as key clinical specialties at the provincial level; the previous one is also an accredited key specialty at the municipal level. The Rheumatology Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine was accredited as a provincial key specialty for the 12th Five-Year Plan of Guangdong and a notable specialty (TCM) at the municipal level. At the district level, the hospital has 16 key disciplines (including Pain Medicine, Infectious Disease, Spine Surgery, Rehabilitation, Gastroenterology, etc.) and 3 key supported disciplines at the district level (Dermatology, Critical Care Medicine, and Pediatrics).
Presently, the hospital houses 2 municipal key labs and 1 Health and Medical Big Data Research Center. It serves as Shenzhen Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base and has 15 national standardized medical residency training centers. Specialties and disciplines of the hospital are well-developed under Shenzhen’s ‘Sanming Project of Medicine’. The project has successfully helped the hospital attract 7 medical teams led by academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including the pain medicine team led by Prof. HAN Jisheng, the general surgery team led by Prof. LI Jieshou, the medical team on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) led by Prof. WANG Zhonggao, the medical team on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) led by Prof. LI Zhaoshen, the dermatological team led by Prof. CHEN Hongduo, the research team on chronic pain led by Prof. ZHANG Xu, and the innovative research team on microbiological and molecular diagnosis of tumors led by Prof. HOU Yunde. The hospital has also attracted 20 high-level medical teams through the project, including the medical team on enteroscopy led by Prof. LIU Side, and the urology team led by Prof. ZENG Guohua.
By the end of June, 2022, Union Shenzhen Hospital has 2261 employees, including 1965 medical professionals. The number of postgraduate degree awardees accounts for 28.17%, among which are 151 doctoral graduates (including 25 post-doctors) and 486 master’s holders; 537 employees hold senior professional titles (including 167 with senior titles and 370 with vice-senior titles) and 964 process medium-grade ones, which account for 66.39% in total. As for talents, Union Shenzhen Hospital currently employs 2 State Council Special Allowance Experts, 2 Shenzhen Special Allowance Experts, 1 Distinguished Young Medical Scholar of Guangdong Province, 1 Guangdong Pearl River Young Scholar, 26 Shenzhen Municipal Talents, and 7 Leading Talents of Nanshan District. In addition, the hospital has 6 doctoral supervisors and 72 graduate student supervisors.
As the government has invested 5.3 billion yuan in expanding the scale of the hospital, Union Shenzhen Hospital will cover a total construction area of 592,400 square meters, with 2400 underground parking spots and a link to the metro station on the underground floor. Union Shenzhen Hospital is planning to offer 3100 beds in the future and serve as an integrated medical center of Nanshan District, functioning as the Center of Emergency Medical Service (EMS); the Medical Center in Wartime; the Center of Treatment in Public Health Emergency (PHE); the Center of Population Health Information; the Center of Imaging, Laboratory Medicine and Pathologic Diagnosis; and the Center of International Medical Services.
