Peking University Shenzhen Hospital
Founded by Shenzhen Municipal Government in 1999, the hospital is a modern and comprehensive public 3A hospital located in Futian Central Area, Shenzhen. In October, 2000, Shenzhen Municipal Government signed an agreement with Peking University to incorporate the hospital into the university’s management system, building a tight hospital-university cooperation as a first mover in China. Since then, the hospital has been officially named “Peking University Shenzhen Hospital.” Currently, the hospital covers an area of 59,000 square meters, with a total floor area of 220,000 square meters. It is planning to build more clinical areas, including the constructing Shenzhen Xinhua Hospital (the north wing) and the Shenshan Hospital (the east wing) in preparation. In the future, the overall scale of the hospital will exceed 5,000 beds.
Peking University Shenzhen Hospital is a fenceless hospital with beautiful overground surroundings, as 100% of its parking spots are underground. It currently opens 1778 beds, and has 56 clinical or medical services departments. Through joint application by the hospital and the local government, the Department of Urology has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as a national key discipline. In addition, the Department of Stomatology is a high-level key clinical specialty at the provincial level; 8 departments are accredited as key clinical specialties at the provincial level, including the Department of Orthopedics, Critical Care Medicine, Endocrinology, Nephrology, Dermatology, Medical Imaging, Clinical Laboratory, and Urology. 16 disciplines of the hospital have been nominated on Fudan University’s “List of Outstanding Specialties in South China.” On the research capacity, the hospital has one National & Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Orthopaedic Biomaterials (national-level laboratory), one provincial key laboratory of Male Reproduction and Genetics, and a dozen of research platforms at the provincial or municipal level. Since 2020, 10 disciplines of the hospital – stomatology, urology, etc. – have been among the Top 100 in the Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM).
The hospital has more than 3000 employees, among which are nearly 2700 health care providers, over 820 senior professional title holders, and over 800 postgraduate degree awardees. It also has 82 high-level talents, including 3 National Distinguished Experts and 10 at provincial or municipal levels. Peking University Shenzhen Hospital possesses large medical devices with a total value of CNY 1.7 billion. Such devices include CT, MR, Da Vinci Xi Surgical System, the “TrueBeam 2.7” Linear Accelerator, PET-CT, etc. Moreover, the hospital services about 3.06 million outpatients and discharges 97,000 inpatients, and operates around 72,000 inpatient cases every year.
Peking University Shenzhen Hospital has set up the first postdoctoral research station in the healthcare system of Shenzhen, and has established 6 doctoral programs and 18 master’s programs. At present, the hospital has about 120 supervisors, with over 300 graduates and postgraduates in cultivation. It also has 26 national standardized medical residency training bases, and 17 specialty training bases for Peking University, thus enrolling over 1000 students, clinical interns, residents, graduates and visiting physicians annually.
The hospital is a pilot for establishing a modern hospital management system in China, a key institution for the construction of high-level hospitals and an institution for construction of smart hospitals in Guangdong Province, also a demonstration for improving medical services. In the National Tertiary Public Hospital Performance Appraisal, it ranked 59 out of the top 100, got grades of “A+” for two consecutive years. The hospital has been evaluated as an A-level hospital or the best general hospital in Shenzhen for 16 consecutive years. It is also the first batch hospitals in Guangdong Province that passed the Level Six Accreditation in Applications of National Electronic Healthcare Record System and Class B Level Five Accreditation in the Standardization and Maturity Assessment of Hospitals’ Information Connectivity (HIC). In the 2020 China HIC Competitiveness Rankings, Peking University Shenzhen hospital was listed the 10th among all smart hospitals in China.
Holding the value of “to be benevolent and good-willed, to be erudite and well-skilled,” Peking University Shenzhen Hospital will implement the strategy of “one trunk, two branches 3.0,” prioritizing medical treatment as the trunk, and paying attention to the construction of smart hospital and the development of clinical research as the branches. The hospital is planning to develop itself into a medical center in the Great Bay Area with advanced clinical skills, high quality, excellent service, and a first-class management system. Thus, it will be able to provide high-qualified healthcare services for citizens in Shenzhen or even in the Great Bay Area.
