The Second Affiliated Hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

The Second Affiliated Hospital, CUHK-Shenzhen/Longgang District People's Hospital of Shenzhen is located in the central city of Longgang in the eastern part of Shenzhen, situated in the core development area of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Established in 1993, the hospital is a Grade-A tertiary hospital integrating medical service, education and scientific research. It is currently a national postdoctoral research station, a GCP certified organization, a teaching hospital of general higher medical education in Guangdong Province, a pilot unit of modern hospital management system in Shenzhen, and the leader unit of Longgang District People's Hospital Group as well as the medical consortium.

Longgang District People's Hospital of Shenzhen covers an area of 60,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 160,000 square meters, 1,000 open beds, and up to 2,000 beds in the second phase of expansion plan. The hospital currently sees a total of 2.1 million outpatient visits per year, with more than 40,000 discharges annually. It is equipped with various types of medical equipment worth over 700 million yuan, including CT (5 units, including 1 high-end dual-source CT), MRI (3 units, 2 of 3.0T and 1 of 1.5T), DSA (2 units) and a series of high-end equipment, such as digital mammography X-ray machines, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) systems, intelligent drug dispensing systems, high-definition electronic gastroenteroscopy systems.

The hospital employs over 1,700 staff members, with 19.82% holding senior professoinal titles and 40.88% holding intermediate professoinal titles. It includes 51 doctors (18 of whom are postdoctoral fellows) and 438 masters. There are 10 doctoral supervisors and 43 master's supervisors. Meanwhile, the hospital has more than 20 talents at various levels, including one expert with special government allowance of the State Council, one national talent from the Millions of Talents Project, one national overseas high-level outstanding young talent, one person of the Chinese Academy of Sciences “Hundred Talents Program”, one leading medical talent at provincial level, one individual from the Shenzhen Peacock Program (Class C), and nine special appointment positions in Shenzhen Healthcare System, and 10 from the Shenlong Talent Program.

The hospital operates 43 clinical and technical departments and oversees 20 community health service centers as well as one outpatient clinic for drug maintenance therapy. The Department of Chinese and Western Medicine Combined Gynecology is a specialty department recognized for its Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) characteristics in Guangdong Province and Shenzhen, and the Department of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine and Rehabilitation is a targeted support project for the high-quality development of TCM specialies in Shenzhen. The Departments of Gastroenterology, Rehabilitation, Neurology, Nephrology, Integrative Gynecology and Spine Surgery are the key specialties in Longgang District. In addition, the Departments of Cardiovascular Medicine and Endocrinology and Metabolism are specialties being cultivated in Longgang District. Following the concept of "leading specialities driving the development of discipline clusters", the hospital focuses on building six major distinctive clusters of specialties, including the Digestive Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Cardiovascular Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Cerebrovascular Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Trauma Center, and the Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Integration and Rehabilitation Center. Among them, the Diagnostic and Treatment Center for Digestive Diseases has introduced the expert team from National Key Discipline of Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University, which is the first batch of medical and health care “Three Project” in Shenzhen and now it’s the alliance unit of National Center for Prevention and Control of Early Cancer of the Digestive Tract, National Clinical Training Base of Capsule Endoscopy Research Center, National Emergency Rescue and Treatment Base for Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding, and Demonstration Center of Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Helicobacter pylori in Guangdong Province (the first one in the eastern part of Shenzhen). The Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Center is the national standard version of the Chest Pain Center, the national standardized Atrial Fibrillation Center Demonstration Center, China's Heart Failure Center Construction Unit, the National Alliance of Cardiomyopathy Specialties Regional Center of Excellence in Guidance, and the Guangdong Provincial District Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment Center (the first one in the eastern part of Shenzhen). And the Cerebrovascular Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Center is one of the first batch of national demonstration stroke prevention and treatment centers (top 100 in China), and one of the second batch of “Healthy China - Stroke Recognition” action pilot units, the National Third-class Hospital Stroke Center, and an advanced unit of Guangdong Provincial Stroke Center for continuous quality control (7th in the province), . Moreover, the team has innovatively launched a cognitive tool for rapid identification of stroke patients - Stroke Talk, Laugh, and Move, which has been widely disseminated in the industry. The Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Treatment Center has established a Chinese diabetes training base (Shenzhen) with the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard Medical School, and it’s a Shenzhen Diabetes Subspecialty Nurses Clinical Practice Specialty Base. The Trauma Center has established Longgang District Traffic Trauma Treatment Center in cooperation with the Traffic Medical Research Institute of the Chinese People's Liberation Army which is the construction unit of the China Trauma Alliance. Combined Chinese and Western Medicine Rehabilitation Center is the vice-chair unit of Intergrated Chinese and Western Medicine Branch of Guangdong Province Rehabilitation Medicine Association and the main chair unit of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialized Committee of Longgang District Medical Association.

In recent years, the clinical diagnosis and treatment technology level in the hospital has been rapidly improved, and it has completed the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), 2 national and 36 Guangdong Provincial limited clinical application technology records for tumor ablation therapy. There are pioneered treatments for other acute cerebral infarction thrombosis treatment, cerebral/carotid stenosis interventional therapy, intracranial aneurysm craniectomy, diagnosis and treatment of early gastrointestinal cancer ESD, ultrasound endoscopy EUS, ERCP, brain-computer interface hand Rehabilitation robotics, chronic occlusive lesion (CTO) treatment, autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation followed by CAR-T cell therapy for lymphoma, biologic therapy for immune kidney disease, and laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy and other surgical techniques are at the leading level in Shenzhen.

Shenzhen Longgang District People's Hospital adheres to the development of science and education. It has jointly established research platforms such as the Aggregation-Induced Emission Clinical Translational Research Center, the Institute of Digestive Diseases, the Institute of Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases, and the Research Centre for Medical Big Data and Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, it jointly cultivates postdoctoral fellows with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the University of Science and Technology of China, Shenzhen University, and the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over the past five years, the hospital has awarded 10 national natural projects, 152 provincial and municipal-level scientific research projects, published more than 650 academic papers (including more than 100 SCI papers), obtained more than 20 national patents, and received national scientifc innovation awards such as the second prize of the National Medical Science and Technology Innovation, the second prize of the Science and Technology of the Chinese Association of Preventive Medicine, the second prize of the National Women's and Children's Health Science and Technology, and the third prize of the Huaxia Medical Science and Technology, and other national science and technology awards, as well as the provincial science and technology innovation, such as the first and second prize and so on. In terms of teaching, the hospital also undertakes the teaching tasks for postgraduate and undergraduate students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Jinan University, Guangdong Medical University, Anhui Medical University, Zunyi Medical University, Hubei Medical College and other institutions.

International exchanges and cooperation are vibrant at the hospital. It has successively established exchanges and cooperative relationships with remowned medical institutions in many countries and regions, such as the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard Medical School, the University Hospital Regensburg of Germany, the Alfred Hospital of Australia, the Japan Welfare Medical Association, the Oral Health Association of Japan, and the Prince of Wales Hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The hospital has welcomed visits and exchanges from Nobel Laureate in Chemistry and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Arieh Warshel. Besides, it has organized high-level academic conferences, such as the 5th International Symposium on Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE), the Greater Bay Area International Forum on Higher Medical Education, and other Academician Summit.
