Dean's Message

It is my honor and privilege as your Founding Dean of Medicine together with our faculty and staff at CUHK-Shenzhen MED to welcome all of you as the 2023 inaugural class in the School of Medicine. You are a very special class of medical students, the Generation Z (iGen) with top academic grade, who will be the third graduation class at CUHK-Shenzhen MED as a new generation of physicians in 6 years' time.

In the next 6 years of clinical medicine training, you will be an integral member of the CUHK-Shenzhen MED family. Transition from high school to medical school, the workload in study and later in clinical medicine may be daunting to some of you. But, you have our commitment from day 1 of your journey to the day you receive your degree as a medical expert graduated from CUHK-Shenzhen MED, that our faculty, staff and myself will ensure you are well educated and mentored not only as a medical expert, also an all-rounded professional allowing you to excel in continuing development to serve your patients and your community.

I quote from the Canadian ice hockey icon Wayne Gretzky of his phenomenal success in this sport - “I don’t skate to where the puck is; I skate to where the puck is going.” In this new era of computer automation and artificial intelligence, our Medicine Curriculum and Programme (templated from the CUHK MED which is ranked QS 28 in world ranking), will equip you become a medical expert in the 21^st century through innovative learning, discovery, care and leadership. Integrating pre-clinical and clinical training, adopting a competency-based pedagogy, conducting innovative learning in simulation and clinical skill lab, using independent problem-based and flip classroom learning mode, you will master the foundation in medicine during the pre-clinical years and will be guided through the transition into the clinical years to consolidate your medicine knowledge and technical skills. In this process, you will also acquire the fundamental knowledge in bioethics, professionalism, research, data sciences, biomedical engineering, evidence and value-based clinical decision-making. You with your peers and other healthcare professional will learn of teamwork and respect, diversity and inclusiveness, social responsibility and accountability. In the final year, you can expand your career development into a primary care physician or clinical specialist, and/or into a clinician-educator, or a clinician-scientist. At last, you will be a 21^st century medical expert with the attributes as a professional, scholar, health advocate, leader, collaborator, and communicator. Not only you will become a competent and caring physician in treating the diseases, but also in upstream health promotion and disease prevention to address the need and growth of the healthcare demand in Greater Bay Area and in China.

Finally, you have our commitment of your success in the School; and I do like your commitment to take care of your own well-being in terms of the mind, body and spirit in this important journey together. I like you sometime to pause, to think, to explore, and to build a life-long friendship with your classmates and peers. I know each one of you will make our faculty, staff and I very proud as our inaugural class of 2023 CUHK-Shenzhen MEDICINE.
