Guarding Lives with Expertise: A CUHK-Shenzhen Student's Pediatric Elective in Hong Kong's Healthcare System
From June to July 2025, Year 4 Clinical Medicine student Ashley SUN from School of Medicine, CUHK-Shenzhen, embarked on a four-week pediatric elective journey, delving into the intricacies of Hong Kong's healthcare operations.

“Guarding Lives with Expertise”

This elective rotation brought me unexpected rewards. Through extended outpatient clinic sessions, I witnessed both the remarkable efficiency of Hong Kong's primary care-specialist collaboration system and the quiet resignation of patients enduring long wait times. What truly amazed me was how Hong Kong physicians, despite working with relatively limited medical resources, demonstrated such exceptional mastery in utilizing patient history and physical examinations, along with profound clinical reasoning.

On the wards, every tier of doctors maintained thorough familiarity with each patient's condition, and the twice-daily grand rounds stood as a powerful safeguard for patient safety. I'm especially grateful to my supervising physician for their tireless guidance in answering my questions, which provided me with a new perspective on medicine.
