Event News | iCUHKSZ International Summit 2024: AI Medical Education and Research
On September 21st, the iCUHKSZ International Summit 2024 : AI Medical Education and Research was held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. The summit was hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, organized by CUHK-Shenzhen School of MEDICINE and co-organized by the Second Affiliated Hospital of CUHK-Shenzhen, which is a student-centred global forum for advancing cutting-edge research and real-world applications in medical education and the healthcare sector.
The summit was chaired by Prof. Davy CHENG, Founding Dean of the School of MEDICINE at CUHK-Shenzhen, and Prof. WANG Weimin, Vice President of Peking University Health Science Center. This one-day event convenes a diverse array of leading clinicians, AI researchers, technology innovators, and policymakers to future clinician-scientists (i.e., MED student team) to share insights, catalyse interdisciplinary collaboration, and chart the future of this transformative field.
The forum also invited leaders from Guangdong and Shenzhen governments, domestic and international universities/medical schools, and various departments of our University to attend the event. The distinguished guests include Deputy Director-General of Department of Education of Guangdong Province, Prof. FENG Wei; Vice President of CUHK-Shenzhen, Prof. Tom LUO; Deputy Director of the Science and Education Office of Public Hygiene and Health Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, Ms. QIU Bing; Vice-President & Provost of University of Toronto, Prof. Trevor YOUNG; President & CEO of University Health Network, Prof. Kevin SMITH; Founding Member of AIMED, Prof. Anthony CHANG.
In addition, domestic sister universities/medical schools were invited to participate in this forum, including Peking University Health Science Center, Southern Medical University, Shantou University Medical College, Jinan University School of Medicine, Southern University of Science and Technology School of Medicine, and Shenzhen University Medical School, etc.
Summit Highlights

The atmosphere at the forum was lively, attracting nearly 200 participants to engage offline and collectively savor this international academic feast.
Opening Ceremony
Prof. FENG Wei, Deputy Director-General of Department of Education of Guangdong Province, delivered the opening speech. He emphasized that education is a major plan for China, artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful force driving educational reform. In the field of medical education and research, the potential of AI is infinitely broad. CUHK-Shenzhen, with its unique geographical location, has gathered innovative resources, high-end talents, and advanced technologies from the mainland, the Hong Kong and Macao regions. In the future, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will continue to deepen scientific and technological collaboration and exchanges with the region, the country, and the world, jointly promoting the transformation and innovation of medical education and research achievements. Finally, Prof. FENG Wei wished the summit a complete success.
Prof. Davy Cheng, Founding Dean of the School of MEDICINE, CUHK-Shenzhen, first extended a warm welcome to all invited speakers and participants. He stated that the purpose of this summit is to provide a platform for the exchange of cutting-edge innovations in AI and medical education, and he looks forward to the participants generating innovative ideas and sparks of thought. The CUHK-Shenzhen School of MEDICINE will cultivate a new generation of medical professionals equipped with AI capabilities, and he hopes that the attending students will gain valuable insights from the experiences shared by the experts and scholars.
Signing Ceremony
In the presence of all attendees, three medical education collaboration agreements were signed at the forum. Vice President Tom LUO, CUHK-Shenzhen, and Vice President Trevor YOUNG, the University of Toronto, signed the Memorandum of Understanding and the "Student Mobility Agreement between CUHK-Shenzhen and University of Toronto". Prof. Davy Cheng, Founding Dean of the School of MEDICINE, CUHK-Shenzhen, and Prof. Kevin SMITH, President and CEO of University Health Network, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of MED and UHN respectively.

Looking ahead, CUHK-Shenzhen and School of MEDICINE will engage in comprehensive collaboration with partners in education, research, and talent cultivation to jointly promote the global development of medical education and healthcare.

Student Presentation&Award Ceremony
The student showcase brought outstanding young students from the School of MEDICINE, CUHK-Shenzhen who are innovative and practically skilled. A total of 27 student team research projects were presented, which added more vitality and creativity to the summit and attracted many attendees to view and exchange in front of the posters.
Three groups of student representatives from the Clinical Medicine Programme took to the stage to present, namely:
“Wearable Device for Aneurysm Rupture Risk Evaluation Using AI Analysis of Pulsatile Tinnitus” from team LI Xiaomeng (Year 3), LI Yunxi (Year 3), “AI Image Analysis of Post Surgical Photos to Detect Silent Breast Implant Rupture” from team WU Tong (Year 3), YANG Ruiqi (Year 3), “AI Pattern Recognition in Home Audio Monitoring for Early Detection of Urodynamic Changes in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia” from team LI Jichang (Year 4), LONG Lijie (Year 4).

Dean Davy Cheng delivered the closing speech. He expressed his sincere gratitude to the speakers, guests, and volunteers for their contributions. He looked forward to collaboration and resource sharing among all parties to promote interdisciplinary research and jointly advance the fourth generation of medical education.
